The canal stretch is readily accessible and is a popular pike fishery. Pike, perch, roach, bream and eels are available to catch. Fishing at Portna is restricted to the stretch below the locks. Upstream of the locks is inaccessible and dangerous due to the rocky banks.

How to get there

Portna is situated off the A54 Kilrea-Portglenone Road. Leave Kilrea and travel 0.4km. Turn left for a short distance and then left again to the canal area. Click the map for more information.
