On Saturday, September 24, the Loughs Agency is hosting a free Angling Open Day on Newry Canal at the WIN Business Park from 10am to 4pm.
Adults, juniors, experienced anglers and novices are welcome to come along and experience a range of different fishing techniques and get tips and hints across game, coarse and sea angling disciplines. Delivered by qualified angling coaches and instructors there will be single and double handed fly casting tuition, fly tying, bait rigging as well as fishing and demonstrations on Newry Canal (adjacent to the WIN Business Park and within walking distance).
Fly Tyers Sam Andrews, Don McCloskey. Brendan Gormley and Ian Gamble will be providing instruction on fly tying techniques and tips to create your own fly from scratch. Gerard McAleer will be demonstrating casting and giving tips to help you master your cast. Eugene Andrews will help visitors learn different types of bait rigging and how to create your own rigs for sea fishing. On the canal there will be plenty of opportunity for fishing practise under the guidance of coaches. Local coach Geoff Quinn said ‘there will be a coarse fishing workshops for younger anglers to learn and gain the CAST Award. Philip Jackson, two times world pairs champion angler will be at the event giving tuition and demonstrations.
John Pollock, CEO at Loughs Agency said, “this event aims to encourage new and experienced anglers to learn or hone new skills in angling. It’s a great opportunity for youngsters to learn the basics of fishing and perhaps give them confidence to take it up as a hobby. Indeed, we’d like to encourage adults who would like to take up angling to come along too.”
